Excel 2k: Cannot open the Clipboard

When cutting and pasting in excel i get a message "Cannot open the Clipboard." WHY? All i am doing is copying 2 cells from excel to notepad. If I close excel and re-open it, it wil let me do ONE copy and paste before it brings up the clipboard message again.
this is really frustrating. any one know WHY? or even better, HOW TO FIX?
