I'd like to try and duplicate your situation but I can't unless you tell us how your cells merged - horizontally, vertically or both?

Please explain in detail what you are doing and what is happening.

First, I thank you for responding. The workbook became protected, how I don't know, and was impossible to release. Conditional formatting and protection functions were unavailable. I simply copied the worksheets one by one to another workbook where the protections were not in place. This solved all my problems, which was good since I'd been working the book for 5 hours without saving. Thanks again for your help. It would be nice to know how the book became protected in the first place without the possibility of releasing it.
