Excel 2003 files don't open

March 2, 2009 at 18:05:00
Specs: Windows XP
Hi - I have Excel 2003.

When I double click on a XLS doc, nothing opens.

If I open Excel & then use the Open command, files will open.

If I am on the Network, I cannot open any network docs. Right Clicking & opening in a new tab yields a basically blank screen w/ the Excel header and one field.

I have gone to Tools/Options/General & My Ignore other programs field is unchecked.

Is there any other advice you can give that might help restore Excel to its working glory?

I'll assume you have already rebooted.

Next I'd grab my Office disks and run Detect and Repair.

Then I might try one of the "repair shortcuts" utilities available on the web.

Not sure where I'd go after that.

Oh yeah...

I'd run something like SuperAntiSpyware also.

Also you might try:

Find an excel file, then right click, then click on properties and see what it says about the file.
It should say something like:

Type of file: Microsoft Excel Worksheet
Opens With: Microsoft Excel for Windows

If it does not say Opens With Excel, click the change button and select Excel, click OK, click Apply.

Thanks to both of you!

Running the spyware program did the trick.

I am now one happy camper.

Have a great day,
