error when clicking on email link

While browsing with Explorer 6x, when I click on a link that should open my email client, I receive an error that my default mapi client is not properly installed. Then I immediately get about 50 screens of browser windows of "this page cannot be displayed". I've uninstalled and reinstalled office xp 2002, and done all updates. Nothing fixes the problem, although everything works fine when I send and receive email with Outlook or Outlook express. I have outlook set as the default email client.
