Encarta World Atlas

I have installed all of my old programs on W2K and everything works well, except for Encarta 96 World Atlas. I can open the Atlas program, and usually get to find just one place before this ubiquitous error message... "Encarta 96 World Atlas is unable to continue running. The problem may be the result of low system resources such as memory or disk space. Try closing other running applications or freeing up disk space before restarting World Atlas" I have 25 gigs hard drive free, and 100 megs RAM available. Shutting down running apps does not help. The Atlas runs flawlessly on Win 98 with similar PC specs.
I've researched in MS KB and on Google and found nothing pertinent to the Atlas 96 version.
Do you think it is a lost cause, and that the Atlas program is just too old for W2K, or might someone have a miracle fix ?

Krystyna,
I suspect that Atlas 96 is trying to use a DOS memeory call.
Since Win2k only emulates it (dos)and does not allow direct contact with the processor (HAL -Harware Abstraction Layer) I think the problem is that the program is too old.
