You can think of a pdf file like being a photocopy of a document. In simple terms you create a pdf by creating a document with an application such as MS Word or Publisher or Excel. Once they're created you can't really edit the pdf per say, rather edit the document it originated from and re-make the pdf.
Adobe let you creat pdfs online by submitting Word, Publisher, Excel documents etc. You can sign up for 5 free pdf creations. Obviously you can buy Adobe Acrobat (Not Adobe Acrobat Reader that you can get for free) to make them when you like.

Hope this is clear. Do ask if it's not.

Sorry bimbleweed, but thats completely wrong. You can easily edit .pdfs using Acrobat. You only can't doing it using Acrobat Reader (as you say).
If you have the full install, then you use the "Touch Up Text" tool, if its text you want to change, but really you can change virtually anything.
And pdf's are NOT stored like photocopies at all. Things like text boxes are stored as such, which is why Acrobat has to alert you whn it doesn't recognise fonts.
If it were a "photocopy" then the file sizes would be huge - and thats the whole point!
Anyway: I spent 4 seconds doing a Google search to see if there are free packages to do this (if you don't have Acrobat) and guess what... of course there are
There are probably loads of better ones, but you can probably use Google yourself...
