Office 07 has a facility for opening previous versions of saved documents in the 'Open' dialogue box. Can anyone tell me if this option is available in Office XP or Office 2003?

Thanks in advance

I'm not aware of any way you can open a Previous Version of a file using File, Open. Unless of course you saved it as a different filename. There is a "Track Changes" option that allows you to view all the changes made to the document.

Information here:

This is available in Office 2003. Is that what you're talking about?

Thanks for reply. No, in 2007 it saves previous versions of a document and under the 'open', 'open as copy' etc. there's a 'show previous versions' option - great for helping students who've accidentally over-writtten a previously saved copy ;-). Guess it isn't there then, but thanks anyway.

I don't see that in my Word 2007. And, if you select "Show Previous Versions" on your system, what options are there? Are the filesnames and extensions the same, and where are the files located?

Try File...Versions, assuming you actually saved a previous version.

Yep, if previous versions have been saved, saving on top would normally overwrite them (for all intents & purposes) but 'previous versions' recovers (at least) the last saved one. I guess if you've never had to use it you probably won't have seen it. Thanks for responses - question answered.

K. I found this in Word 2003 help by entering versions. So you actually have to save the different versions. Now I get it.
