You can disable the spell/grammar checker that underlines words & phrases as you type. here are the steps:
• STEP 1: Go to the Tools menu.
• STEP 2: Select Spelling and Grammar.
• STEP 3: Click the Options button.
• STEP 4: Deselect the Check Spelling as You Type checkbox.
• STEP 5: Select or deselect any of the other choices in this window, according to which features you want to use.

And you can disable the spell check for a blank document:
Tools > Language > Set Language > check "Do not check spelling or grammar"

The student can, if he/she knows a little bit, turn these features back on again.
