Can you tell me why, after I've clicked on certain icons on my desktop, the icon picture changes to a small, brown e with a white background? This doesn't happen with all of the icons, just with certain ones. I always change them back, but after I've accessed the application it belongs to, it will automatically go back to the small, brown e. Can you help me understand why this happens?

Yes, you have allowed the small brown e application to reset itself as the default application for that particular file type.
Go into it's options and change it to suit your needs.

I'm sorry, I didn't explain myself very well in my previous posting. I have gone into the Properties of these icons and, on the Web Document tab, clicked on the Change Icon button. I change the icon, click on Apply, then click on OK. The icon will change right away, to what I choose, but once I open the application and close it again, it reverts back to the small e. This is what I'm trying to find out....why, after I've changed the icon and accessed the application, does it always revert back to the small e?
