I have had the hardest time trying to
delete returns in KWord as I used to do in
WordPerfect and other Windows software.
Whatever I do the Find function will not
recognize the Return character. Can anyone
help?

As previously answered. The return character is different in *nix than MS software. There is some software that handles this problem.

going from windows text files to unix text files is a common exaple in sed tutorials.

The first one google turned up
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/articles/l-sed3.xml
says the comand is
sed -e 's/.$//' mydos.txt > myunix.txt

and the next result does it a different way
% sed -e "s/^M//" filename > newfilename
To enter ^M, type CTRL-V, then CTRL-M. That is, hold down the CTRL key then press V and M in succession.

Thanks much for yr replies. I will try
them, but I am still not hip to Linux ways.
What frustrates me is that in KWord there is
a Search (Find) dialog box (Ctrl-F) that
gives you End of line, Start of line,
Newline, Carriage return, but none of them
recognizes the Return character!

I don't use K-Word. But maybe K-Word can't find the Microsoft version of Return. (from your other posts regarding extra returns in text and e-mails) This problem has existed since the creation of alternate operating systems. I wrote a utility for unix to msdos text before the web became popular.

but the same thing happens with KWord's
*own* returns . . . It must have a way of
finding characters it makes itself?

dear kate23,

> ... It must have a way of finding characters it makes itself?

no, it must not - not at the moment, at least. i'm afraid what you want is just not possible in an easy way - you'll have to do it by hand.

don't despair - sometimes it can be quite frustrating to try and get a meaningful answer from linux-fans. they seem to live in some sort of tech-world of their own and often don't have the slightest clue what you are talking about - see above responses.

still, linux is a fantastic system, and kword too, if you consider that most of it has ben made by people in their spare time.
to compensate for that, it just needs a little more effort from its users - like this extra manually deleting of returns - and i expect that, too, will change sooner or later ...

maybe it's some comfort that in other, commercial systems, not everything is a rosy as it looks at first glance.
i also use a modern macintosh, which is deservedly legendary for its user-friendlyness. there the wordprocessor has no problem finding and replacing "returns" - at first.
but just change your mind later and try to insert some new paragraphs at the beginning of the document - this confuses the program, and you're back to manually deleting every superfluous return ...

so my conclusion is that i can as well stay with linux and kword - and the prospects are good, there is a lot of development happening there.
