Folks,

I have a big csv file (comma seperated stuff).

I have simply right clicked on that file, and selected "open with...access"

Access does great - it opens it up and even provides a little wizard which shows me the fields, etc, that will be created.

I continue....the resulting table looks great! HOWEVER, when I go to edit anything...I get the message:

Updating data in a linked table is not supported by this ISAM

I then noticed that a "linked" table was created. I assume it means that it is still associated with the original csv file.

HOW DO I CONVERT THIS CSV FILE TO SOMETHING I CAN EDIT???

(I HAVE tried opening Access...then selecting "Convert to Access"...then selected the csv file.....and I get the message "not a recoginized format" --- but it recognizes it just fine when linking (???))

Any advice greately appreciated !
THANKS!

I don't use Access any more and never used it much to begin with but, try opening and saving the .csv in Excel as a .xls file. Then you can import it into Access or even copy and paste it into Access.

That's one way.

Hi

In Windows Explorer.

Left click to select the file.

Right click and the use Open With to open the file in Excel.

Once open in Excel

Save the Excel file as a *.xls file a normal Excel spreadsheet.

You should be able to edit the Ecel spreadsheet.

Folks,

I tried the Excel technique. That would work for most dbs....but I've got an exception......over 270K records (Excel's limits are around 60K lines).

HOWEVER.....you can do this in Access...but I still have a problem.....

You create a blank database in Access...and just cancel the Wizard when it come up. THEN you right-click on Tables, then Import, then select txt/csv format.....then find the file...and that does it. It will quickly import almost any # of records.

HOWEVER......my comma delimited txt file has more that 30 fields per record....but the Access import feature is Truncating after 30 fields. For some reason...it only brings in 30 fields MAX. It just will not bring in anything else.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

THANKS

Update:

Importing that txt file....
The deal is the First line...
It has to have as many fields (or comma delimited entries) as the maximum of any record in the entire file.

The import function evidently gets field # info from that first line.

I just added some filler fields with misc text, reimported, it got all info (more that 30 fields)..

So...that's how to do it if anyone ever comes across this import-truncation issue.
