Comment:

I am looking to set up conditional formatting based on the first 3 letters of a particular cell. So if the cell says VACMOM or VACDAD or VACSISTER the cell would change colors but if it said VICKY or VERONICA it would stay the same. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Jared

OK, here’s a simple solution:

1st – Select the cell A1 and enter VACMOM or VACDAD or VACSISTER.

On the Menu Bar:

2nd - Format
3rd - Conditional Formatting
4th – Change “Cell Value is” to “Formula Is”
5th – Enter the formula:

=IF(LEFT(A1,3)="VAC",TRUE,FALSE)

Sub Menu Format :
6th - Patterns
7th - Choose a Pretty Color
8th - Press OK
9th - Press OK
