Might sound like a stupid question with an equally obvious answer, but what exactly does the compacting feature achieve? How does it increase file storage efficiency?

It actually cleans out the "Open spaces" for lack of a better term within the pst file. Sort of like compacting an Access database.

It should significantly decrease the size of the pst file (after deleting all the unnecessary items of course), therefore increasing the amount of data that can be added before reaching the 2GB limit.
