I created a Word document, then ran the spelling-check, which gave me the wrong result. I then noticed that it was set to English (U.S.). I made sure that the Custom Dictionary and Language were set to English (British), and clicked Default, so that Tools, Options now shows English (British) as the default dictionary.

That changed the template, but not my document. I therefore copied-and-pasted my document into a New File, but again was stuck with English (U.S.).

I started another New File, and typed a few characters in before copying-and-pasting again. I now found that, if I started the spelling-check when the insertion-point was on any of the extra characters, it showed English (British), but if I started it with the insertion-point anywhere on the pasted material, it showed English (U.S.).

I have tried back-spacing from the beginning of the pasted material to bring it to the top left-hand corner of the first page, but that does not work.

If I were using WordPerfect, I seem to remember that I could View Codes, which would enable me to remove the English (U.S.) code that must be lingering somewhere at the beginning of the document, but I am unable to produce this result with Word, though I have tried Alt-F9.

Can anyone help me to sort this one out ?

Hi Paieye,

Set the language to English (UK) by doing this:
Tools, Language, Set Language, Eng (UK), Default.

This shd solve your problem.
