When trying to replying to certain mails in Outlook the NewWindow opens and after typing a few words the window hangs. Then I have to "end task" it. But the main window of Outlook does not hang. With certain mails this problem does not happen. I thought it must be because of file size but some mails with big file sizes does not create this problem. Can any one help me out with this?

don't send nothing yet; first diagnose it = just click send/receive to see what it does; if you see the status bar trying to do something -> cancel status bar -> make sure what you are sending in outbox is correct in case it's just from your side or some email is hung

Are you using Norton Anti Spam or Internet Security? The add-in toolbar has caused problems like this for me occasionally. When Outlook gets totally hung up, I remove the Norton add-in from the COM add-ins manager. It reinstalls itself when Outlook starts the next time anyway, unless you deinstall the app or delete the .dll itself. But it resolves the problem.
The other thing to watch out for is too many emails, since PST files get corrupted very easily. Try archiving old messages if you're keeping more than 500 total in all folders. 256 meg of RAM doesn't go as far as it used to.
