I couldn't open my Word 2000 program, so I decided to reinstall it. I uninstalled it and then tried to reinstall it, but the Word installation program insisted that I had to enter the "25-character product key," beginning with the "CD Key." However, the "Product ID" on the envelope that contained Microsoft Works when I bought my Dell computer in 2001 contains only 20 characters and there is no "CD Key." The "help" feature on the Word installation program says that the "CD ROM Key Number" is located on the "yellow sticker on the back of the CD-ROM jewel case," but my Word program didn't come in a jewel case, it came as part of Microsoft Works Suite 2000, which Dell sent me in a brown envelope, not a jewel case. The "Certificate of Authenticity" on the Works envelope says, "For product support, contact the manufacturer of your computer system," but based on past experience I know that's hopeless, especially since I bought my Dell so long ago.
And no, I didn't back up my Word program. I assumed I didn't have to, since I had the original program on CD!Please help!
Terry

My Dell came with booklets for the Microsoft products; the keys are found on stickers on the back of those booklets.
Dell support should be able to help if you can't find the key anywhere. Or I have had luck contacting Microsoft registration by phone.
Best Wishes,
Bob

My Word product key code appears on the front of the booklet "Discovering Microsoft Word 2000."
If you no longer have this booklet, call Dell Software Support at 800-433-9005. Take the Service Tag option. Once Dell verifies that you are the legal owner of the system they will provide a generic key code at no charge. This is applicable to Microsoft applications prior to 2002.
