can't open word document

I am using office 2002 and cannot open a word document. I have all the latest updates and can open other documents up. When opening the file it will display, then all of a sudden i get a error message saying microsoft word has encountered a problem and needs to close. It was sent via email...tried opening it up in email then tried saving it to desktop and still same problem. even tried copying it and renaming it...nothing. please help techies!!!
