Comment:

I use Outlook 2003. Recently for the first time I went to make a new distribution list by going: File > New > Distribution List.

This brought up a window titled "Untitled - Distribution List". Within this window, whenever I click the "Select Members..." button, I get the following error message:

---------------------------
Microsoft Office Outlook
---------------------------
The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For information on how to remove this folder from the Outlook Address Book, see Microsoft Office Outlook Help.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

So far as I know, all my contacts are in a single folder, and I don't actually know how to change folders or even where the existing folder is.

Could anyone please help with this?

Just found a solution from the Microsoft website:

1. Start Outlook.
2. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
3. Click View or change existing directories or address books, and then click Next.
4. Click Outlook Address Book, and then click Remove.
5. Click Yes when you receive the prompt to confirm the removal.
6. Click Add.
7. Click Additional Address Books, and then click Next.
8. Click Outlook Address Book, and then click Next.
9. Click OK when you receive the message to restart Outlook.
10. Click Finish.
11. Click Exit on the File menu to quit Outlook.
12. Restart Outlook.
13. In the Folder list, right-click the folder that you want to use with the Address Book (for example, right-click Contacts), and then click Properties.
14. Click the Outlook Address Book tab.
15. Click to select the Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book check box (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.

Phew!

My fix for this is also posted in the HowTo section of this website. I'm guessing you didn't check there before posting. :)

I tried the above solution also, but I am trying to use a contacts list that is shared from another computer to create a distribution list. I am guessing that solution doesn't really apply to a shared contact list, because when I go to its properties I don't get the Outlook Address Book tab so I don't know if it is shown as an e-mail Address Book or not. Do I need to change this option on the originating computer from where the contact list is being shared? That seems like it would be a plausible solution. Is there any other help you can give me?
