I just got a new computer running Vista. I had an old copy of Office 97 which I tried to install. The software never worked correctly so I got a copy of Office 2003 small business edition. The problem is that now I can't uninstall the 97 or install the 03. The actual installation starts but the progress bar never moves and the installation never finishes. I tried to do a system restore and it didn't work, I got a message that system restore was unsuccessful for unknown reasons. What do I do now? I just got this computer and I would love if it ran correctly. Thanks.

I think you might have screwed your new Dell when you forcibly installed Office 97. In case you didn't know it, Vista System Restore (SR) features concern themselves only with files essential to the operating system and nothing else. Whatever you did, you have in effect irreversibly damaged SR.

Your best bet is to boot to Dell Recovery discs to reinstate Vista back to factory preinstalled condition. Afterward you can then install Office 2003 that is compatible with Vista according to the following MSKB.
