Can't change pattern color in cells

October 24, 2009 at 14:15:26
Specs: Windows XP, 128
I want some cells to have a background pattern. I can get a green background with black dots, but I just want a green dotted background on white. I can see the pattern I want in the color fill/pattern format tab, but It won't apply what I see to the cell. It just shows a solid green background. Hove i changed a setting somewhere without realizing it? I used to be able to get Excel to do this.

You say 'you used to be able to get Excel to do this'.

What are you using now.

Please identify the program and version.

I am still using Excel XP. The same I used before when I could do this. I think I am missing a step or changed a setting or something.

When you go to cell format, select cell shading and the colour (green) from the colour pallete.

Then click the pattern drop-down.

A second colour palette opens, as well as the pattern selector.

Select White

The Pattern selector closes.

Then select the Pattern drop-down again, and select the pattern required.

The pattern should now be white on a green background.

Does this sequence work?

If not let us know what happens when you follow this routine.

Worked. Thanks! I was missing a step in there or doing them in the wrong order.
