I have an Excel file that I cannot open. When I try, I get a message that says file may be Read-only or a read- only location. I went a checked the file is not setup on read only, its on archive. It was created on Office 97/ Win 95. I've also tried Office 2000/ Win XP with no luck. Any help would be great. Thanks Greg

It does sound like a corrupted file, but you still have some choices available to you if you can't open it read-only:
1) Get it repaired professionally (usually costs around £20)
2) If you only need the data and not the formulae, then you can replicate the file by linking to it cell by cell (as long as you know the sheet names)
3) If you know VBA, then you can read out the formulae and cell formats remotely - it isn't all that difficult. (Note that this will EVENTUALLY cause a problem when it hits the cause of the initial corruption, so you would have to handle errors)
