Could somebody tell me how to convert an ASCII fixed width format file to a CSV File. I am a bit of a beginner at this so any help would be gratefully accepted

open it up in open office's spreadsheet application and save as CSV - don't think you can do this in Excel - if not it's a fairly simple programming exercise for someone with a couple of hours to burn

You should be able to do it in a spreadsheet. That said, the last time I did it was using Lotus 123, Excel I'm sure would be similar.
You don't mention how many fields per line, type of variables, how many lines, and whether this is a recurring task.
Actually a relatively simple BASIC program can do it easily.

Try opening Excel. Go to File, Open. Navigate to your file and select it. The wizard will open and ask you what you want to do.
When done just save it as .csv from the File Save As menu item.
