i want to attach a photo for each record in my database. what is the best size for these images?

Depends upon how many items you have and how much disk space you have and how much impact on the speed of the systen.

i have about 1200 images, my disk space is not a problem and "impact on the system"-I'm not sure i know what that means. my database of 1200 images, once created will not have any more additions to it... static i guess you'd say.

It depends upon the use of the images. If like a catalog can be small of sufficient resolution. If multiple images are showed on a page, they should be the same size. Pictures can be linked to the database with only the location stored in the data.
