Every time I try to run any Microsoft Office program, simultaneous with the splash screen, a Windows Installer window shows up and says "Preparing to install..." which then changes into a Microsoft Office with FrontPage window saying "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage..." This then brings up another installation window saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in the box below" [The box below is a browse field.]
I've searched my computer for anything *.MSI or PROPLUS, but there isn't any file like it. Eventually I would end up having to insert a Microsoft Office CD and install whatever it's looking for. As long as I click on cancel at the first window that automatically opened up, I can let the Office Program I executed continue and go on with my day, making this automatic installation program just an annoyance.
(This installer comes up at any kind of execution of an Office program, not just manually. If, for example, I'm searching the internet and click on an e-mail link that opens up Outlook for me, I would have to do the same thing.)
If anyone has any ideas of what I can do about this, please reply.

You might try going through the add remove programs in the control panel and select Microsoft Office and click on change. When the screen appears that says "what type of installation do you want to run" select Custom. When the list of Microsoft Office applications appears, right click on each one and select "run from my computer". When you have selected all the office applicatons you plan on using, continue with the installation. This should prevent the system from asking for the MS Office disk when you open an application

I did try that, they call it a "configuration wizard", but it brought me to the same thing. I set everything to "Run from my computer" but when I press Update to apply the changes that same window opens up with the browse field. So close.
The path the computer is looking for is
\\ris\CDs\Apps\officeXP+SP1+SP2\
and it's looking for the file PROPLUS.MSI. I can't find either of thes files anywhere on my computer, and so far I haven't found them up for download from Microsoft.com or the rest of the internet.

It appears that your version was installed from a Network. If not, then it's looking for the ris folder on your local drive. If the software can't find the path from where the software was installed, it will indeed give you the errors you describe.

when you hit START-RUN and enter the path:
\\ris\CDs\Apps\officeXP+SP1+SP2\can you see a folder structure?
if not...try
\\ris
only and work through the directories CDs\Apps\officeXP+SP1+SP2\if this still does not show up anything, talk to your local IT guy.

I have the same problem like Greg from yesterday and I think that it maybe some virus. It is absolutely same problem. I found this forum by google. I don't know what to do...

Same Problem on this PC in Belgium,
using Win98 and OfficeXP. But only
Word seems to be affected, all other
Office products work. Bizarre.PROPLUS.MSI is an installer file
on the Office CD, its not a Virus.\\ris\CDs\Apps\officeXP+SP1+SP2\ seems
to be the network path to an Office CD.That's how much I know,
Help is still appreciated.abf

I found the solution for my setup.
Maybe it can help your setup too:GO to this page
http://bsdpaq.redirectme.net/abf/download/officexp/Download both files into one folder
Start Word, wait for the error dialog,
press BROWSE and go to that one folder.that's it! It helped me!

PS: the files are from the original CD.

I had the same problem. You need the office cd. The file is on there (just look for it with windows search, located in the start menu). I solved it by installing the service packs. When you download thm from internet though, it asks for the cd. After this it will show the installation screen one more time and then not anymore.
