While in the process creating Excel spreadsheet, I tried to create spcial characters using ALT key and the corrrosponding ASCII code. I tried every possible combination wihtout any success. ATL + ASCII code didn't produce anything. I tried Num Lock key OFF and ON couple of time see if that was the problem. That didn't work either. I tried with the numeric keys on the keyboard and I also tried ALT + ASCII code with 3,4,5,6 didgit number and I was still not getting aby result. I then went to MS Word and Notepad and tried ALT + ASCII code, and I got th same negative result. What is wrong? Could it be that you have to select certain option in MS Office for this to work? Anyhelp for be appreciated.

If you are trying to use symbols or other special characters, Go to Excel Help - Symbols. Apparently the ALT+code does not work with all Fonts. They have an alternate method.

Perhaps another way... Start, Run, charmap, click Ok. Change to the same font you are working with in Excel. Click on the character of choice, hit the Select button, click on the Copy button.
Go to Excel and Paste it into your spreadsheet. eg. ® € ™
While clicking on the character of choice you can verify that you had the correct Alt+xxxx code by looking in the bottom right hand corner of the Character Map's dialog box.
