Adobe Distiller DPI settings

I am having a problem setting up the default DPI settings in Distiller. I would like to set it at 300 DPI and make that the default for all documents. When I set it, it works for one document but then when I try to print something else, it goes back to 600 or sometimes 1200. I have admin on the machine as well as the printer. Am I missing something? Can this be done so that all documents are set to create the pdf in 300 DPI?
