2003 Excel Can't Open 2007 Excel

December 16, 2009 at 22:30:18
Specs: Windows XP, Sony Vaio/512Ram
I currently have Microsoft Office 2003 installed. I am unable to open files sent to me in 2007 version (at least Excel files from what I can tell). I have attempted to install the free Microsoft File converter but keep getting the error message "installation failed". I have installed Office 2003 (SP3) which includes SP1 and SP2) which is required before I can install the FileFormatConverters.exe. I am following instuctions I got from Microsoft Knowledgebase and downloaded the file from Microsoft. I have made sure that all high-priority updates are always installed and keep those current on my laptop (Sony). Can anyone help me solve this problem? I'm not ready to upgrade with the 2007 version, but I need to be able to use 2007 files that I receive.
Is there any other way to be able to convert these files?
Appreciate all your help.

Read the above article - it should help you. You can also ask whoever send you the excel files to try to save it in Excel 97-2003 compatibility format for you.

If you tried to run FileFormatConverters.exe from the download page (i.e. Run, rather than save), try saving it to your PC first and then run it.

Another possibility is that FileFormatConverters.exe was corrupted. Try a new download and then run it.

Other ways to read the xlsx files from Excel 2007:
1. The free Microsoft Excel viewer here
2. The free Open Office suite here

Thanks everyone. I downloaded it again and starrted over and it worked this time. The first download must have been a corrupted file.
