Comment: im having this problem since 3days ago. I tried to connect 2 pcs at my home together. I bought and installed D-Link 10/100 NIC in both machine and connected them using a crossover cable. The Network connection is up in both machine with 100M/Bs. But i cant see one and another in the network. I cant even ping one and onother. Seems like the packets cant send out from the machines. I'm using 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 with netmask 255.0.0.0 . I disable the firewall for this connection in both pc. i even tried with diferent ip e.g 192.168.10.xx & netmask 255.255.255.0. still failed. There should be No probelm with the cable as it is from my friend's existing pc - pc network. Please help me out with this. I'm frustrated. Thanks in advance. ~

Reply: (edit)Me and my flatmate have exactly the same problem, first off we had to change his network card as his didn't work in the first place and mine was only a 10Mb card, so we got two new 10/100 NIC, we swapped his card first and yay the network worked cool great, then we changed my older card to the 10/100 thats when the s--- hit the fan, so far we have had about three goes already at trying to get the thing going. And we I say three goes I mean going back to scrath, formatting and reinstalling Windows XP. But still to no avail we can't ping So if you have already solved this problem please do tell And We are really frustrated we have some games to play. Thanks in Advance - to anyone that can help

Reply: (edit)Hi, My first suggestion would be, check Device manager to make sure the NIC is functioning properly, and check the lights on the NIC then PING the local loopback address: 127.0.0.1, if you can PING this, that will identify that you have you TCP/IP configured correctly. If its unable to PING the loopback address then you know that its not set up correctly. My second step would be to assign yourself an IP address then try and PING that from your local machine, if that doesnt work you know that there is a mis-configuration. Also try pinging your computer name, this will suggest that DNS is working. If you are able to ping you assigned IP address, try pinging another address on the other computer, if that doesnt work and all the others did, then you could have a faulty card or cable. Also my other thought is, try to make the entire network 10/100mbs dont have one machine running 100mbs, because that again could be a possible failure.

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem, both PCs could ping the loopback, and XP said that it was connected. Look into the sockets on the NICs. Often the cable didn't go into the NIC squarely once, and some of the pins in the sockets were bent down flat a little. On mine those pins that told XP it was connected were fine, but the data pins were bent, so it didn't ping. If they are bent flat, just ease them back up with a bent paperclip so they are springy and will contact the cable connectors, and try again. Good luck with the problem and let me know how you get on.

Reply: (edit)The socket's pins are okay in both side and brand new. Is it anything to do with the settings on my both XP machine. At once i created workgroup for my network with name "abc" in computer A, and then after reboot i can see the workgroup from both of the computers. However I only can see both the computers in workgroup "abc" from computer B. I only can see the computer but cant access it, messages prompting " you have no permissions to bla bla bla. ...contact the system adminstrator." Please help.

Reply: (edit)It seems like my both Xp box doesn't like crossover cable connection. I used a hub and everything is working fine. Is a very expensive experience for me :) .
