I have a problem getting a file sharing network connection between 2 computers, one running windows 98SE and one running a dual boot Windows ME/Windows XP. Basically the computer running windows 98SE sees the network fine and allows complete sharing of files, but the computer with windows XP it will not allow me access to the 98SE network. This is the error i get when trying to access the 98SE computer with the XP computer.

"(computer name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Network path was not found."

When i boot with windows ME everything is fine, but when booting with XP it will not access the network connection. It must be something to do with users/groups in XP but, as far as i can tell, everthing looks right. The work group name is the same and sharing is enabled.

If you have any idea which area i should be looking in i'd really appreciate it.

Dartean,
I'm not sure of your level of expertise with windows, but you have looked at the obvious, the IP's are on the same subnet, same workgroup's etc. Windows XP does not install Netbios by default so make sure you have IP installed on both boxes.

Are your shares on the Win98 Box or on the XP box? The shares work a little different with XP, there is a shared directory space that you can move file to if you want to share. Also, are you running XP Pro or Home? Is your account set up as an administrative account?

Check the items above, and let me know the results and I will try to help you through this problem.

Charles

Ok, i read another message about the network setup disk created in XP causing some problems with someones WIN98SE setup. I formatted and re-installed win98SE and DID NOT use the network setup disk from XP. I just manually changed the settings and worked the first time.

try setting it up first without that network setup disk... may help.

I resolved the issue, finally, by removing
NWLINK IPX/SPX/NETBIOS COMPATIBLE TRANSPORT PROTOCOL.

Rebooted, and finally able to connect to other pc's running win98...

I just found this message board today (12/12/01). I am too unfortunately having the exact same issue. I have two win98 systems and a new WinXP system. They all shared a cable modem internet connection via ethernet connections and a hub. The two 98 system still "see" each other and the net just fine. They are still running NetBeui. The new XP system "sees" the net, but not the 98 systems. I read somewhere that XP is not compatible with NetBeui. Is this correct? If it is what can I do about changing my network configuration to make everyting work together? I know that TCP/IP protocol seems t be a valid alternative, but I'm not sure how manually configuring IP addresses will affect the DHCP properties of my cable modem internet connection.

Does anyone have any specific suggestions?

I was able to get a response back from a Microsoft technical support person. Apparently NetBUEI is in fact compatible with Windows XP. They even included the protocol files on the XP CD. You have to manually copy the files to the correct directories, but it did in fact work for me. I am now running one XP system and two Win98 SE systems on my peer to peer network. If anyone needs the instructions on how to do this I can forward them to you. Just e-mail me your request.

I have the same issue, WinXP home (or pro) system won't talk to my Win98SE network. It sees the PCs but won't open them ("you may not have permission, etc.") . Found the NetBeui files on WinXP CD, installed it, disabled firewalls, etc, nothing works.

Please let us know what Msft has to say.

Thanks, George.

On the above issue from what I hear and read Netbeui should work with XP, but I had lot of headache and frustration. Plus Microsoft states they discontinued it and will not support it. So here is a different way to get connected. (Works Awesome)
Fix. (If you want)
Just found this article on 12/28/01
Yes, I finally got XP Pro for Christmas on 12/25/01
Installed it on 12/27/01. First let me explain what I have.
2 Win95 Client
2 Win98 Client
1 Win98 Client upgraded to XP Pro then converted hard drive to NTFS!!!!!!!
Yes, once I installed XP pro I thought how cool, but to my surprise I found that my XP pro could not see any of the other clients.
However, all my other clients could see my XP.
What I use and don't use.
Microsoft XP does not support NetBeui anymore and yes that is ok to do file and print sharing. Instead of NetBeui you can use the Microsoft IPX protocol to share files and printers. (I learned this a long time ago with the game Heretic it could be played by IPX.) Yes, all Clients need to be changed to IPX instead of NetBeui. However my XP pro could still not see the other clients until on each client I right clicked on the IPX protcol went to properties and and checked the I want to enable Netbios over IPX/SPX. This will add a new protocol to your clients called Netbios support for IPX/SPX. As for the XP Pro you will need to have the two protcols added
1. NWLINK Bios
2. NWLINK IPX/SPX/NETBIOS COMPATIBLE.
For security this is great. Because it needs to be bound to Microsoft Client where the TCPIP does not get bound to the Microsoft Clients. Helping prevent security issues.
Once I enabled the Netbios over IPX/SPX on every client connected to the workgroup my XP Pro computer could see all clients.
I hope this helps.
If anyone uses or wants help with the following information I would be glad to help or just hear how your xp experiences go.
Best of Luck!!!!!!!

I had a very similar problem. Win 2000 machine connecting to the Internet and shared folders/printer through a Win XP machine. Kept getting "network path not found". Sometimes the machines could "see" one another, sometimes not. Internet connection worked, but unable to share files.

Good news. I installed the NWLINK IPX/SPX protocol, and we're off and running. Access works both ways, shared printers, the whole thing.

Thanks to Dan!

Dan,
Yep, that was it! I installed the NWLink/NetWare protocols on my Win2K box and on WinXP and they both see each other just fine now. One question, I thought this was a NetWare protocol? Should I disable NetBEUI now?

Thanks,
Brett
