I know this has probably come up so many times but I'm trying to network two XP-SP1 computers using ICS and it won't work.

They can ping each other both by IP and by name. The host can't view or access the client's files and the client can view the hosts shared docs but not access them. Also the client can't access the net through the host. They both have separate computer names and the same workgroup. I've taken off the XP firewall from the host and uninstalled Norton.

I've tried using static IPs, using the XP Network Setup mulitple times but it still won't work.

Yesterday after frigging around with it, at one stage I got internet access on the client but no file sharing access, then later on, vice versa. I also had to reinstall XP on the client, then the connectivity was lost.

Both comps are COMPAQ. The host is 701mz/128mb while the client is 900mz/128mb.

I had trouble sharing the Shared Docs folder on the host but now it seems to be working.

Can someone help? The host computer pops up an "Access is denied" error message. Alternatively, can anyone suggest any other networking software besides MS ICS that will work better?

Sorry, forgot to add that they're connected through a crossover cable.

I hope these work. I haven't used it this way, but I have been through the screens enough times to see how it is done.

On the computer that doesn't have the internet, try the following:

Right click My Network Places - Setup home or small office network - Next - Next - This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network ...

You can have the computer create a bridge for you or you can create the connections manually. Try the Bridge first, if it doesn't work try the manual method.

I hope this helps.

Mike

No luck. I've been through so many websites and so many troubleshooters.

I looked through the Event Viewer and the following came up:

The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration, insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code.
-According to MSKB, this is fine and should just be ignored.

The other thing that just starting popping up more recently is:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 0080AD708D02. The IP address being used is 169.254.122.3.
- The interesting thing with this is that the card I'm using for the lan won't let me select "Client for Microsoft Networks" or "File and Printer Sharing". I select the two options, then when I click OK it pops up with "Your current selection will also disable the following components: Client for Microsoft..." no matter what I do, it won't let me enable them. I've tried re-running the network wizard umpteen times but no luck. This could be the result of bridging the two connections then removing the bridge.

I also tried access to the remote files via the command prompt. It would let me run the files but wouldn't let me copy any. It kept saying "Access denied". I've searched through both XP User Permissions and NTFS permissions with no luck.

Both comps are NTFS and I've set up the same users on both with the same passwords and access levels. They are also using the same network protocols (besides that issue above) and the XP firewall is turned off.

H E L P M E P L E A S E ? ? ?
