I'm having a problem getting my network to function properly. I have 2 machines, one XP Home & the other XP Pro (which I changed from 2000 Pro the other day). They're on a 10/100 network by crossover. The main one I use is the one with XP Pro newly installed.

Before I changed the 2000 Machine to XP Pro the network was acceptable, I use it to store music on the other machine (XP Home), & it worked in that direction, but browsing from XP Home -> 2000Pro was unacceptably slow, but this didn't concern me since I only access files from the other way.

Now they both have XP, but the XP Pro cant see the XP Home, but XP Home can see XP Pro. The Home one doensn't show up in 'View workgroup computers', yet I can see its shared folders. If I try opeining a shared folder, I get -

"blah\ is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource..."

If I map any of the to a drive letter & try accessing them this way, I get -

"An error has occurred while connecting to blah blah..."
"The network cannot be reached..."
"The connection has not been restored"

So far, sounds like something isnt set up right, I reckon.

IP addresses

XP Pro - 192.168.0.1
XP Home- 192.168.0.2

both have a subnet of 255.255.255.0

The default gateway of XP Pro is set to the IP of XP Home. Both have shared folders, & both have file sharing enabled.

I've tried all I can & I'm stumped. Sorry for the long post, can anyone see my problem?

Help would be much appreciated

Matt

Hi all,

i actually setting up a small workgroup between one PC(running Win98se) and a laptop(running winXP professional) and i have a problem on connecting them together, non of them can see each other, the hub and ethernet card seems to work so far, as when i ping there respective IP of each of them they get the packets, but they both do "time out request" well then i assume the problem is the protocol, so i set it up the following way:

Windows XP Professional

NIC - FE574B - 3com Pc-card Fast Ethernet
Protocol installed:
Client Microsoft Networks
File and printer sharing
Qos packer scheduler
TCP/IP

IP: 192.168.2.100
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: NO
WINS: only this is enable ''Enable - Netbios over IP''

Windows 98(se)

NIC- PC 10/100 Fast Ethernet adapter.

Protocol Installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
TCP/IP
File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

IP: 192.168.2.101
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: NO
WINS: Disable WINS resolution

On my XP, default USER is XPCOMP and I have added a user WIN98COMP with same password as on my 98 machine.

WORKGROUP NAME: MSHOME on both XP and Win98(se) machines.

HUB: CHEETAHUB AC-EH2009 (8 ports).

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The problem you're getting between the two systems is pretty common... I used to have the same thing. There's a few things you can do, but you must always assume that between a windows 98 and XP computers on a network it will always be somewhat odd, because they're based on a slightly different network system (one is the earlier 95/98 system, while the other is NT based). Here's what I recommend: First, add the correct propticols.

Your XP system should only need:

-Client for Microsoft Networks
-TCP/IP
-IPX/SPX/...da dad dah (But here's the catch - this one MUST have Netbios support).
-File and Printer Support
-Qos Packet Scheduler and Network monitor driver are NOT NECESSARY.

I'm pretty sure you can get through on your XP system with only the Microsoft Family Logon, but I've heard that this one is somewhat slower. After you get it all working try changing this to Client for Microsoft Networks for a little more speed.

Anyways, after that, go to the 98 system.
Add these proticols:
-Client for Microsoft Networks
-TCP/IP
-IPX/SPX
-File and Printer Sharing
-(If I can recall, I think somewhere there was a switch for netbios support on the IPX/SPX. If there was, turn it on).

It is vital that you have the IPX/SPX for both the XP and 98 - This is the only branch I ever found between the two.

Once you have all that installed, and that both 98 and XP are both sharing at least one directory (you can check this on the Network Neighbourhood of the machine that's supposed to be sharing the folders) - RUN NETWORK SETUP WIZARD ON XP. This little annoying program will do all the difference for an XP and 98 network. As for the rest of your machines they both sound fine (just make sure they're both in the same workgroup). Mail me if there's any more trouble.
Peace,

In Answer to Matt Smith:

It's to do with sharing and security properties of files within the folder being incorrectly set.

1. Go to any folder > Tools > Folder Options > Disable Simple File Sharing

2. Choose you desired folder to share > Right-click Share & Security > Share this Folder

3. Click on Permissions > Set all to Allow

4. Go back > the Security tab at top > Set everything to Allow

5. (Important) Click on Advanced > Select all Permission Entries > Check both box boxes below = "Inherit from Parent" and "Replace Permissions"

6. Computer should think for a while > Voila

I disagree with Dave about IPX/SPX being required here. I have a home net that shares nicely among XPpro, ME, 98, 95, and even 3.11 using nothing but TCP/IP. The main thing to look for if it doesn't work is that in XP "NETBIOS over TCP/IP" must be checked under the WINS tab on advanced TCP/IP properties. Also, if any other protocols are installed on the earlier versions you need to ensure that TCP/IP is installed and selected as the default protocol. I usually just delete the others unless there is some good reason for keeping them.
