Hello,

I've been in a real trouble since last few days. At last here I'm submitting this issue for help on computing.net ... so let me thank you for your help in advance...

I'm trying to setup an internet gateway on my xp machine having 2 Realtek nics installed on it. I want to have my 4 other win98,xp based machines get internet access thru this geteway.

Problem : When I enable my internal network connection from NETWORK CONNECTIONS, the external internet stops and I don't get a ping reply from the external internet gateway...and as soon as I disable my internal network connection from NETWORK CONNECTIONS, I get a free flow of internet to my gateway computer. So the conclusion is,,, I can not get my internal network reach to the internet through a 602 proxy running on my gateway computer. Please tell me how to solve this problem....

Gateway configuration :
NIC 1 : (connects to enternal internet over lan)
IP, Subnet : 192.168.5.75, 255.255.255.245
Gateway : 192.168.5.50
DNS server : 172.10.0.1

I've set up the 2nd nic on my gateway as follows:
NIC 2 : ( internal lan interface : connects to a switch on the main slot, the other pcs are hooked to the same switch)
IP,Subnet : 192.168.0.1 , 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.5.50
DNS server : 172.10.0.1
. . . . . . . . .

NIC Configuration of internal PCs connected thru switch :
IPs : 192.168.0.2 , 192.168.0.3 , 192.168.0.4 , 192.168.0.5
Subnet masks : 255.255.255.0
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS server : 192.168.0.1

I'm running 602's Lansuite as my proxy on my gateway with dns processing disabled. ( I want the dns queries from my internal network forwarded to 172.10.0.1 ..

As I mentioned, I've provided static IP addressed to pcs on my my internal network and thus I'm not running the DHCP server that comes with 602 Lansuite.

Please let me know if I've correctly assigned IPs to NIC2 on gateway and other NICs on my internal lan... I've tried a bridged connection on my gateway pc bridging both the NICs together and then assigning the bridge connection the IP configuration of NIC1 and then restarting the gateway pc. But it didn't work...
Please tell me what should I do so that

1) I'm able to to access both, my internal network and internet at the same time.
2) I can have all my internal pcs on my internal Lan share the same internet through gateway.

Please help.
Thanks once again.

Yours Sincerely
James Anderson

if you use a proxy on the gateway, it will only forward what it was designed to do.... i.e. http pop ftp etc.

knowing that.

disable the XP bridge, take the gateway IP out of NIC 2 on the gateway.

by entering gateway addresses on both of the nics you are hosing your route to 0.0.0.0

to verify type route print at the command prompt of the gateway.

when you type ping 66.66.66.66 on a box, the computer first checks to see if the destination address is local to any connected network interfaces, it will then check the routing tables to see if there is a route to that network, if not it will send the packet to the 'gateway'.

Even though you are using the same address for both i'd pull it out and see. (leave blank for the interface that it is not actually connected to)

Hi

is it possible to just to set static ip addresses for the 4 win 98 pcs
192.168.10.1 (,2,3,4 etc) 255.255.255.0
same network group then simply use xp's software bridge on the pc conected to the internet?

as here

(not using lan suite at all btw)

Hello sanchosancho,
I removed the dns server entry for the NIC2 ( linking to internal network on my gateway)... and now I can browse all sites and internet through all additional PCs through proxy on gateway. But here I face a peculiar problem.... the internet access stops within some time . say 3 mins... and then I have to shut down and restart my proxy server,,, and then the internet is up again! What can be the reason beind it !?

Thanks friend,
Best Regards
James.

hello,

things i'd check first -

1) the external IP on your gateway has the wrong subnet info. 245 is not a valid subnet mask, check with whoever handles your network access.

2) In this configuration you will need i.e. or whatever browser you are using need to either 'autodetect proxy server' or have the proxy ip info in the connections tab.

3) check the proxy software. Check for updates or known issues.

let me know how it goes.

San,
Thanks for your reply. Yea I checked it, it's not 245, it's 248 ....and I still have this problem.... all pcs including gateway are able to access internet through this proxy server for around 3 or 4 mins before they start getting HOST NOT FOUND error for any domain ... then I only have to shut down my proxy and restart it .. and here you get your internet back!

Please tell me what can be the real problem behind this...
Thanks.
Regards
James

When it starts giving you errors.

jump to a command prompt.

post back the complete output of these.

1) ipconfig /all
2) nslookup yahoo.com
3) ping 127.0.0.1
4) ping yahoo.com
5) ping 66.94.234.13
