client comp. stats: win 98SE, P3 500, 256 MB RAM
I have set up a crossover cable connection between my xp laptop and another computer using 98se, would like to get ICS (using my laptop as the host) working. The internet connection is dial-up. The network works perfectly. I installed the xp ics client on the 98 comp, it can see the xp comp's connection and even connect/disconnect the comps to the net via the gateway but when I open Internet Explorer, it cannot surf. The host can surf, no problem. The XP firewall is off. To get my little network to work, I had to set static IP addresses on the two machines (192.168.0.1 and .2). Articles on the net state that it is necessary to have an "automatically-obtained IP address" on the client for ICS to work, but this breaks the network connection between the two machines. I imagine it's small thing(s), but what am I doing wrong??
Thanks for any help
L. Mitchell

Here is a link that might help you out. The links on how to set up ICS are at the bottom of the page. Might be a good check list for you to go over to see what you might have missed.

Actually, my question was specific details about how to set up a Windows 98 client to an XP host, using the sharing gateway XP provides to put on client computers. This site, like many others, concerns Windows 98SE's ICS software, but setting up the 98 machine as host in this manner could work just as well, dunno.
Thanks anyway,
La Luce Mitchell
