I'm having a problem accessing my XP Pro computer on the network from my laptop running Win ME.
2 computers have XP Pro on them and they can access each other just fine. I'm using a wireless router and connect the 2 XP ones together with an Ethernet cable (through the router). All 3 can access the Internet just fine and my Win Me computer can access the files on 1 of the XP computers, but not the other one. (We'll call that one XP_Old.) All 3 of them have the same user accounts, the same workgroup name, and have plenty of shared
folders on them. Simple file sharing is turned OFF as well as all software firewalls. I even uninstalled ZoneAlarm.

When I use the laptop to access the XP_Old
computer, it gives me an error: "<XP_old> is not accessible. This request is not accepted by the network. Try again later." Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks!

yep I think I know how to fix it.

Check for any username and or password and or accounts settings on <xp_old> and make sure they are all set the same as on the other machines including any user accounts make sure they are the same on all computers.

then check your ip range as <xp_old> might be using an obscure ip address that does not follow the other ones.

You say "we'll call that one XP_old" - what IS it called? W9x NetBIOS won't "see" computer names with certain characters in them, including spaces.

I have the same username on all 3 computers, Owner. It doesn't have a password and it's an admin account on both XP ones. I assume that there's only 1 account type in Win Me. Also, I've checked the IP on that computer and it's 192.168.0.102. The other 2 ones are 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.103.

My actual computer name is called "cx50485-e". Weird, huh? I can see it in the workgroup, I just can't access it.

Did you get this worked out? I am having a similar problem in that my ME machine cannot print to a printer on my XP-Home machine. I do have 2-way xfer of data on all machines and the ME machine can see the XP printer to install the driver for it, but just can't print on it. This is a simple P2P through a data swx. Never had an ME client b4 so I thought maybe I am missing a setting somewhere. I really need to get this puppy fixed by Monday so I will say a heartfelt TIA to anyone who might respond.

related question:

i have files on a win9x computer i want to share with a password. (share level)

i want to be able to access them from an xp pro computer.

i access them just fine if they are shared without a password.

but if i use a password, then when i try to access the share it doesn't work. actually, what happens is that i get a password prompt, but when i type in the password and click ok, nothing happens, it's as if i never clicked ok.
