I have setup a peer to peer XP Pro network for a client. The Network works well except for one major problem:
Each client computer runs a DOS database app locally - all the data is on a P4 2.533/512Mb machine used as a server (and that is ALL this box does).
The DOS app works fine but is not as fast as it used be.
The problem is with attaching files to email – e.g a user writes email (using Outlook - not Express) and needs to attach a Word file which is stored on the server. Using the explorer type interface in Outlook to get the file can take up to 60 seconds and is rarely less that 20 seconds. Directory on the server is 3 levels deep and contains 4000 files. We have tried switching fast indexing off both on the client and server and other little tweaks we have on the net – nothing seems to cure this problem for more than a few minutes before it reappears!
The system that was in place used a W98 box as a server - no such problem!!
Ideas anyone? Please while I still have some hair left!!

Soudns like a simple name resolution problem, although the other systems no the name of the system they connect to they are having a difficult time obtaining the ip address. Make an entry in the hosts file of the client computer pointing them to the right IP address..
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx servername
The hosts file is located in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc i believe, if not search for it. This should really speed up the directory refresh :) Hope this helps
