Comment: sorry for the double post - wasn't sure if I should have put it here in networking or in XP I have recently added a couple new xp home machines to my - peer to peer win98se office network. the problem is that xp is so frightfully slow at recognizing other machines on the network. the 98 machines have no trouble with speed - on my network I am using brand new cat5e cables - 10/100 switches throughout. my network is conected to the internet through a fractional T1 line and a cisco router - the protocol is tcp/ip - zone alarm for firewall - the xp's get on the internet fast - and once connected to one of the 98's drive it transfers files fairly quickly BUT does occasionaly loose connection - well more than occasionally. I have tried every combination of auto senseing the speed or forcing the slowest speed on the cards on the xp's as well as throughout the network - all the while hoping it was some kind of 10/100 problem but no luck, even at 10 half duplex nothing changes (for the better) - nothing works! - the xp firewall is off - like I said I completely removed zonealarm, lowered its settings - its not a problem of seeing other computers as so many of the posts refer to. In fact one of the biggest problems I have is that the connection is so slow and unstable that I cannot print to any of my networked printers - one second the que is seen by xp the next second it times out or worse yet I cannot even add a new printer becuase it times out trying to connect to it. I have seen some people write about some registry tweaks on data flow etc... any ideas PLEASE Scott
