Comment:

I have an XP Pro and a Win98 box connected to a Linksys cable router. Both boxes CAN see the internet. From 98's Network Neighborhood, I see the XP box but cannot connect to it. The XP box doesn't see the 98 box at all.

The firewall in XP is disabled and the Netwoking wizard has not helped. Both boxes use DHCP IPs handled by the router.

PLEASE HELP!!! On day 3 with this mess!

Joe

Try creating & enabling ur XP Pro Guest Account. Login from 98 using this account.
To see 98, enable file and print sharing on ur 98. Ensure they r on the same workgroup

But pinging the 98 box from XP ERRORS out. (Error 65.)

Similar problem, but different. When two PCs on home network were both 98, could share files and printer via Linksys cable router and Linksys NIC cards. Since one PC has been upgraded to XP, neither can see the other, but both can see the internet. XP wizard and floppy disk don't help.

Found the solution (in my case)!!!! It's another #%$%*&^ Microsoft plot to fleece the world!!!! My guess is that the Windows98 PC uses Microsoft NetBEUI for peer to peer networking, which WindowsXP conveniently omits from their list of available drivers on their XP CD.

Their $$$ solution: Try to force upgrading of all PCs on home networks to XP. HOWEVER, buried four levels down on the CD are the two NETBEUI files you need....

The FREE solution: Go to the following obscurely named Microsoft document (HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows XP (Q301041) and follow the simple directions. It takes about 10 minutes to copy the two files to the correct directories and reboot.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q301041

"The information in this article applies to:
* Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
* Microsoft Windows XP Professional

"SUMMARY
"Microsoft has discontinued support for the NetBIOS Extended User Interface (NetBEUI) network protocol in Windows XP. However, it is understandable that migration to another network protocol, such as TCP/IP could involve significant time in planning and testing. Therefore, for those who are planning to migrate your system environment to Windows XP by obtaining the full, retail-released version of Windows XP, the NetBEUI protocol can be found on the Windows XP CD-ROM under the VALUEADD directory.

"This article describes the process for manually installing the unsupported NetBEUI protocol on a computer running Windows XP. The NetBEUI files will need to be manually copied from the Windows XP CD-ROM before NetBEUI will show up in the list of installable network protocols."
