I have the a problem with workgroups and file sharing. I have the following setup in my house.
Netgear Modem/Wireless Router. BT Broadband Business.
The main ‘Family PC’ is connected to my modem/router via cable. It has full internet access. My laptop (upstairs bedroom) is connected to the router via wireless and has full internet connectivity. I was able to previously share files between both the ‘Family PC’ and the Laptop – until now.
I also have a “Jukebox” computer – this is currently in my bedroom connected to the Ethernet port of my Laptop. I have ICS activated and the Jukebox can access the internet though the laptop’s wireless card.
In order for me to achieve this, the router, Family PC and the Laptop wireless card are in subnet 10.0.0.x. The Jukebox and the Ethernet port of the laptop are in subnet 192.168.0.x – this is because Windows wanted to assign the Ethernet port 192.168.0.1 when I was enabling ICS.
My problem is that all 3 computers are in the same Workgroup, all have different names and they are connected to the router – but I cannot access documents on the ‘Family PC’ from my Laptop. Similarly, the ‘Family PC’ cannot access the laptop or jukebox for file sharing. At the moment, the laptop and jukebox CAN share files.
I have turned off any firewalls for troubleshooting buy I do plan to restore them and created access lists for them all. I can ping from all hosts successful to all other hosts.
When I open ‘My Network Places’ on the laptop and search for the workgroup it just hangs as if it is confused as to which network it belongs. I think this is probably due to different IP addresses being assigned to the wireless card/Ethernet port of the Laptop.
Is there a work around to this problem as I would like to share files between all computers. I am aware it would be much easier to move the jukebox and connect it directly to the router but I have no spare room near the router nor am I able to run Ethernet cable around the house. Plus, I use the laptop to play games on and use my jukebox with the controls right next to me.
The final option is that I have an old Belkin wireless router (no modem) lying around and have tried to get the two AP’s to connect and I could use the Belkin as an access point in the bedroom. I am able to supply model numbers if anybody thinks this is a viable solution, but I fear neither the Netgear or Belkin has features to support this.
Thanks for your help
D.

I would get the IP address of the Family PC, then in your other PCs, edit your HOST file but adding the IPs and names of the PCs in your LAN. HOST files are C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. open the HOST file with notepad.
Learn more about HOST files using Google, loads of info ouyt there. It basically tells the PC that computer with name LAPTOP holds the address 192.168.x.x. So its now able to identify the route to that PC.
Once you have the IPs and names of each PC, enter all of these into each PCs HOST file. So all PCs know who and where the other PCs are.
