I am trying to set up a workgroup that is running off a 16 port switch that is connected to a router. I cannot get the computers to see each other and only one has internet access. The other computer which doesn’t have internet access is telling me that it cannot resolve the ip. I have tried everything, from manually configuring the ips to bypassing the switch and using just the router and nothing seems to work. I have run the wizard over and over again with every configuration available.

It seems like computer which doesn’t have net access is only sending and not receiving any data, I have tried disabling the firewall and ics on both comps…..I am at my wits end and I have to have this workgroup up and running in 12 hours, any help would be much appreciated

Setup:
Cable modem into SMC Router
SMC Router to SMC 16 Port Switch
Port 2 and 3 of the switch connected to comp1 and comp 2

Start with the basics

Configure the smc router to provide dhcp addresses.
Configure the pcs to be dhcp clients
Reboot the pcs and go to a command/cmd prompt. Type ipconfig. Do they have addresses in the range you established in the router?

In this config you want to remove any ics since you don't need it.

Once you can ping between the pcs tell us what next is wrong.

In my routers dhcp client list it only lists the one pc.

I have both pcs added in the dhcp allow but the second pc is still not connecting to the net

This is all a guess for me so use my idea at your own will.

It seems cable, router, and switch must be connected correctly or you wouldn't have any internet access to any computers, unless one of them happens to be connected to router instead of switch.

I remember having a problem changing switches before. I had a router connected to a switch then to the computers. I left all the computers on, swapped out a switch with more ports then scratched my head trying to figure out why none of them were connecting to the internet or each other.

You could try shutting down all non working computers if possible and restarting them one at a time to allow them to obtain ip address from the router. Or power down everything, then start by turning on either router or switch first and then when their both up try the computers one at a time.

For this to work all computers ip must obtain ip automatically and all browsers must automatically detect lan settings.

What was your original setup of your network if any?

ASUS A7V8X
AMD XP 2700+ 2.17ghz
768mb ddr 2700
128mb FX 5200
WD 80gb
DVD R/RW
