I'm having some serious problems with my internet connection. I'm at university in shared accomodation and the connection is supplied by the uni. My net just doesn't seem to work most of the time, I got a guy from the uni to come look at it and he said it was either a dodgy xp installation or my network card. Well I didnt a repair install and a clean install of xp pro and I bought a new network card instead of my integrated one. He seemed convinced it must be my PC but im not so sure now. Everyone else who shares the same router box thing at the end of the corridoor's internet is working ok except mine. When he tried his laptop in the connection it worked ok but i think that might of been a fluke because it does work sometimes.
What actually happens is that windows doesnt find all the ip address details, it will just have zeros or sometimes it will just have the first few numbers that show in connection status and not others. I tried saving the details when it does work and then entering them in as ones to use permenently but that didnt work.
Is there any way I can find out for sure if its the connection or my PC that's at fault? It's a brand new pc and the only other thing the tech guy could come up with was if i had wireless setup and it interfered or something but i dont have that, only infrared but i tried disabling that.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Get a short patch cable and try connecting to the same port on the 'router box thing at the end of the corridoor'. If no joy then try another port.
You will find out if your cable from the router is bad or if the port on the router is bad. Or if the problem is with the PC.

To Exonerate or Incriminate your PC its NIC or ethernet cable, do the following.
After obtaining consent from your Hostel mates in the shared accomodation & Shared Cable/DSL Router, Power Off the Cable/DSL Router and your PC and disconnect the Ethernet Cable from the Numbered Port of the Router to one of your hostelmate's networked PCs and connect your "sick" PC's ethernet Port and the vacant RJ45 port of the Router using a Straight- through Ethernet cable of sufficient length.
Next, Power On the Router and your Sick PCSee if the "Local Network connection established" message pops up exonerating your PC including its NIC and the Straight-through Ethernet cable used to connect its NIC's RJ45 port with the Router's Port. If you have properly configured the Internet connection to your previously sick PC using its Windows XP Internet Connection Wizard, you must be able to launch your browser to access the Internet using your Broadband connection from the University.

Look at Properties of "My Network Places" (Network Connections). If there is a bridge in there, remove allitems from the bridge and then delete it.
