I finally got my linksys wrt54g wireless router working. It is connected to my windows me computer and my son has a pci adapter hooked up on an XP. All I want is for him to be able to use my printer. I have researched and tried to change settings and when I click network it states unable to browse the network. I tried my network wizard and right at the end it says netconn.exe error. Can someone give me easy steps to allow him to print off of my printer? I have been trying for about 8 hours already.I am very confused and new to this. Thank You

Lisa

First, check and make sure you both have the same workgroup name and IP addresses in the same range. Do a ping test (ie: from a command prompt type the following command: ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where the x's are the IP address of your son's PC). If you get a reply, you should be able to do the rest and get him printing. If you don't get a ping reply, then you need to ensure you're in the same IP range and workgroup and your NIC's/Cables are working and your router is setup properly. Before you can get him printing, you have to have a working network.

Second, create a user account for your son on your PC. Use the same username/password he uses to log onto his PC at bootup to create the account.

Once you've done that, ensure that you have shared your printer. Once it's shared, have him try a print job. If it doesn't work, try adding his user account in the ACL of the printer and try again.

Call me stupid. I assume by command you mean start-run-type command and it comes up in dos. I tried to find my sons ip. I went to his wireless network icon and found 2 of them An ip address and sub. Neither of these has the same amount of xxx's that you show to put in the command?
Also I was trying to use the network wizard again. Of course I had errors again but where I got confused is the setting.
It gives realtek rtl8139(a) based pci fast ethernet adapter. also wan miniport(atw)also dial up networking(aol). The first couple times I tried realtek. This last time I did wan miniport and it showed my computer in networking but then my aol wouldn't work, said I had a firewall on, I made sure it allowed aol but nothing. I restored my computer to an earlier date to change the settings back and got onto aol.

My address has 192.xxx.x.xxx.Is this what you have? And the realtek is an adapter that uses a special wire.It sounds like your son is using wireless. You are using a firewall.Have you made an exception in your firewall for your son's computer address?.My firewall is set to not allow filesharing or browsing and had to make this exception before i could see the other one.

Yes the ip has 10 numbers like yours. I have the wireless router on my computer, my son has the pci adapter on his. I am using McAfee personal firewall free version. I didn't do anything to my firewall. Really don't know how to.

First of all was the site i gave you helpful?.I don't use McAfee so you will have to go through all the firewall settings to try and find the right one.You could also enter this topic in another forum such as firewalls, antivirus, etc. How to ajust McAfee firewall to allow filesharing?.I use Fsecure firewall and antivirus which is provided for free with my high speed subscription.I had to go into the firewall rules section and create a new rule which allows filesharing and browsing from my other computers address only.Once i enabled this rule it worked.

It is helpful but I am so confused. Couldn't even turn a computer on 5 years ago. I have come along way but this is to hard. I may just say forget it and give up. I'll keep reading.

Yeah. I did something right. I actually pinged my sons computer. I didn't put a space between ping and the numbers. And I did fix my firewall settings to allow his ip address. I still can't use the network wizard. Now what?

I'm trying to help you because i just went through it a few weeks ago.I don't know alot about computers but got my comps networked over a period of 2 days by constantly searching the web for any info on this subject i could find.It takes alot of patience because its trial and error. So you both have the same workgroup name and each computer has a name.Go in to your computer and right click on my network places and click find computer.Type in the name of your son's comp. and see if it finds it.Mine took a few tries before it finally found it then click map network drive. You say there is still problems with network wizard.Have you rebooted your computer before trying it again. This might help.

I am still sitting here reading, sick but I guess resting. We have the same work group. Searching found no computers. When I click network it says unable to browse. network wizard says internet connection sharing must have icsharep. Then I get netconn.exe error. Then when you right click network places properties I don't have the ipx and when I click add there are only 2 things listed. But this morning there were a ton of them. I tried extracting the nettrans.inf and 2 others from my me cd and from the site and that didn't work. I have a mess.

Have you enabled printer sharing on your computer.Enable filesharing on your D drive or just a few files if you only have a C drive. Then try what you have been doing from the other end.See if your son's computer sees your computer. If it can that would be enough to share the printer. You just wouldn't be able to access his from yours.

Yes, I did. Actually I was just on his and made sure I had the right computer name and group name and he can see me. My printer shows up and says there isn't the right drivers. I will read up on that. Just makes me mad that his set up wonderful and I can't get anything right on mine.

I had to also install my printer drivers on the other computer thats not hooked up directly to it.Then i had to run the{ i think it was called} windows printer setup wizard.Once this was done it worked. As long as he can use the printer you have suceeded. You can relax for a bit and always try your end again later. If he can access the folders that you designated shared thats good enough. He can send things to your computer and if there is something he wants from you just tell him what shared folder its in and he can just go in and get it.

I am going to work on the printer issue and I gave him almost everything to share. I have been reading alot of your post and others as far as password and user accounts. I'm alittle confused and part of the problem is my son is ten and of course with the kids we all use the same passwords for things, easier to remember, but now I got myself confused. I know we need computer names and the same network name. Now, I had my windows login diabled, the one that comes up when computer goes on. Do I need to have that set to something to network? In above post from Kurt he says to set up user account. Is this what he is talking about?

Go into your win me help section and look under network steps, troubleshooting, etc if you haven't done this already.Every OS seems alittle different.Win xp was okay to setup but the other comp was harder running win 98se.It had windows logon and had to change that to network logon.Went it came up after rebooting if i just hit cancel windows would finish loading and run fine but i could'nt enter network neighbourhood.Only after i entered the password which you create when installing your os did it allow me in to N.N.I don't know if this is the case with ME because it wasn't with XP.Doublecheck you have installed tcp/ip,client for microsoft windows, file and print sharing on both computers.I find this by right clicking on my adapter and hit properties.Did you receive a drivers cd with your printer?.Have you installed them on your sons comp and ran the printer setup wizard?.What happens when you try to access a shared folder on your comp from your sons?.Are there any shared folders visible besides the printer.

As far as user accounts go i will explain my setup. Both computers have a different name but both must have the same workgroup name,eg MSHOME.It will ask for a location name. The comps are 20 feet apart so mine is hallway and the other is bedroom. When i enter my network places it comes up comp name ______ bedroom.

I have our computers named correctly. I have not installed printer drivers yet. Yes I have the tcp/ip. When I go on my sons computer I can access my files. I read somewhere to limit what you share, so I thought maybe not to give him the whole c drive just a couple things in it but you can't do that. It stated a person is using it.
We never had any network passwords or windows passwords before. We would turn the computer on and go, and just shut down. So what your saying is we have to input passwords in network and windows in order to have a network together?

The reason you don't want to share your entire C drive is thats where your operating system is and a mistake could screw up windows.Sometimes if you have recently tried accessing the shared folders but are no longer in there it will still say that.Just power off your son's comp until you make the changes.Take the sharing off C and try again enabling sharing on only the folders you want him to use.Or create a few new folders and make them shared and copy everything into them.Don't turn on his computer until you have completed things on your end. Then turn his on and try it.If it works then install the printer drivers on his and run the printer setup wizard. At the end it will test it by trying to print a test page.

Well, after a week of my kids and I being really sick, I did alot of reading and somehow today I can see my sons computer in my network places. Don't know what I did. I tried setting up his computer to use my printer and no luck.
I went to add printer, it says to chose 1) local printer attached to this computer or 2) network printer or printer on another computer. Then it has a big i and it states to set up a network printer not attached to a print server use local printer option.

Then it states which port, I didn't know so I chose \\Lisa\printer (lan manager printer port) when clicked it states I don't have the correct drivers.

Then it states to chose printer. My printer is not in the list so I clicked have disc, it states insert disc and make sure correct drive is selected. I selected D drive that is his cd drive. Then it comes up. The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.
I checked on microsoft and cannon my printer is compatable with xp. Now what?
