Hi all,
I have a HP Windows 98 PC with a SMC Wireless 802.11b USB Adapter. Until yesterday they worked perfectly fine together. Installing the adapter was a breeze, not too long ago.
Then I reinstalled Windows98 from scratch (incl HD format) because after 5 years the system had become really cluttered. Now I can't get the LAN to work.
PROBLEMS:
1. The USB adapter does not see a wireless network, except when I unplug the USB cable and then plug it in again (which in itself is pretty annoying). Then it quickly finds a link.
2. But even after that, Internet Explorer and Outlook Express cannot find a server, whatever I try.WHAT I TRIED:
- Dial-Up networking (works fine).
- 'Never dial a connection' (doesn't help)
- Remove the Dial-up Adapter (doesn't help)
- Check my wireless router (says it gave out an IP address)
- Check IPconfig (comes up with the same IP address)
- Play with DHCP/IP/Gateway/DNS settings (nothing works, and it all worked fine using defaults before)
- Ping my provider (that works)
- Upgrade Internet Explorer through Windowsupdate by Dialup (didn't work)
- Reinstall Windows (did that 4 times including HD format. Win98 is totally fresh from the System Recovery CD)I get the feeling something pretty basic is missing between Win98 and this wireless adapter. Any ideas? Did I forget that I installed some essential update a few years ago? Is there something else I can check?
Thanks very much for your help or suggestions,
Pjotr.
