I have a really weird problem. I'm new to the network thing, but I understand some. While I was at work on the work computer I updated it from microsoft update. This is a client computer. Ever since then I cannot connect to the internet. I have 2 LAN connections 1 is the wireless card which I got working. The other is the wired card, but no cables go to it. No cables have ever gone to it. I'm so lost. I have gone thru the settings so many times. The wireless was setup to ip 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.2550 subnet. The wired is setup on autoconfig. The wired connection comes back with an error saying the network cable is unplugged. I'm not sure what to do. I also cannot enable file sharing on either connection. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

In order to use that wired network adapter, you need to connect it with network cable to the router, if not it would yell "the network cable is unplugged".

You can also use wireless adapter to join wireless network as long as there is wireless router or access point available.

Either way would work. Advise you to check what kind of router you have in your company first, then make appropriate configuration.

You said "The wired connection comes back with an error saying the network cable is unplugged.". You won't get any connectivity if you don't have a cable connected. What happens if you actually connect a CAT5 cable to the wired connection and the port (wallport)?

If this is a work computer and you've only ever used the wireless, you will probably have to get your Network/Domain Administrator involved so that an IP can be assigned for the NIC MAC address.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Sorry it took so long to reply.

picohat,
The wireless router is a linksys g. I got the wireless running. I found the MAC address and got that to work, but when I try to use IE it won't load a page like it can't find a connection. Also, could on Windows 2000 it auto sets up the connection unlike XP where you configure it manually. I have tried doing ICS but it conflicts with the wired network adapter and still doesn't work.

Jennifer SUMN,
I know I did the cat 5 cable, but I don't have one. We have always been on a wireless network. The problem is with get the network admin is this is a really small company... Owner, Wife, Sales man, Me.

Ensure that you can ping the router's LAN IP from client computer. Also go to the router management page, then go to the status page, ensure the Internet/WAN connection is up.

If still not working even the Internet link is up, then the DNS servers might not work to resolve the URL. Then you can try to use following free DNS servers from OpenDNS.com.

208.67.220.220
208.67.222.222

Hope helps..
