Hello, I am currently in college and I connect to the wireless broadband fine. Internet works, but when i try some other applications, such as Steam or Poker.com, i cant seem to be able to connect. I have added these programs as exceptions in my windows firewall, even though turning off the firewall altogther did not help me either. The wireless router i am using is a Cisco. Is there a way that I call allow connections to these applications? There is no wireless security (WEP/WPA).

Wireless is not the best solution for gaming. While it shouldn't adversely affect an online poker site as much as a graphically intensive multi player game like Company of Heroes or Medal of Honor, I still recommend to friends they avoid wireless for gaming regardless.
Wireless is a convenience, and not the most reliable one around. If you want solid, secure, reliable connectivity, you always want to go with a wired solution.

Maybe the college network admin are blocking you, have you asked them if you are allowed to use a wireless router or access certain sites ??

To be honest, i have no idea! Now i cant use webcams either..the image doesnt seem to send. I heard of something called port forwarding..would that help? I.e. allow me to connect to Steam etc?

Dude! Check the rule book for your internet usage! You want to get kicked out??? You are being blocked AND LOGGED by the college Administration. There is NOTHING you can do to change their blocking. Take a networking class so you will understand how and why.
Imagine the power if you knew how to internet search

He means any attempts to use blocked ports are being logged...as in, "user such and such with IP so and so and MAC address such and such attempted to connect to port # on [date] at [time]"...the information being written to a log file on a server or network device someplace where the network admin or network technician can look through it at his leisure.
I know, I'm a network technician and I work for a university.
Here's what you need to do. Call the network support department and tell them what it is you want to do and ask if it's possible......BUT, only do so after rereading the "appropriate use" policy you signed off on (and were actually supposed to read before signing) when first enrolling. Once you've reread it and are sure you understand what is and isn't appropriate, if what you want to do isn't prohibited, then call and ask for help.

Another thing, you may want to add Wireless encryption. I had a problem where my computer would connect to my neighbors computer two floors below me before it would connect to my wireless right next to the computer. I added the security, then you can tell it "Use this wireless". It's more stable.
