I have a friend that cannot get DSL or Cable high speed. He has 2 computers right now there networked with a crossover cable from one networkcard to the other. He has problems like everyweek. Its really getting anoying for him. So this was just an idea of mine maybe its dumb or maybe it will work. The main computer that dials up never has a problem. So if he ran a cat 5 out of his network card to the modem in on the router would that work like that? The telephone company promised him DSL like 2 years ago and the cable company also is giveing him the run around. He is so tired of dial up and tired of the network messing up. I sure hope this idea works.

Thanks

I'm a little confused about what you are asking. The title of your post and the actual text don't realyl go together. Anyhow, here is a link you might check out. Sums up sharing of a dial up connection pretty well http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/...

A possible alternative. Dump the ICS and use a dialup modem with ethernet router - Actiontec Dual PC Modem. It seems like a good idea but may not be compatible with your ISP.

Ok its hard to explain what i want to do. The main computer that connects to the internet with a dial up modem. There is a crossovercable hooked to the NIC running to another computer and hooked to its NIC. The main computer has ICS enabled. He keeps haveing problems and he really rather not buy anything because anyday he should be able to get high speed. But he already has a router. So if he runs the cat 5 cable from the NIC on the main computer to the modem in on the router then runs another cat 5 from the router to the other computers will it work like that? Im sorry this is the best way i can explain.

Thanks

Oh, gotcha now. Yes it will work (maybe), but this won't help anything. The connection will still function the same, except you would then have another piece of hardware that could cause problems. I see no benefit in doing it that way.

Ah, it's a wireless router. In that case, yes it would help. What you should do though it connect the computer with the dial up connection to one of the LAN ports on the wireless router.
