Comment:

i have a linksys wrt54gs on one floor, and an smc eliteconnect smc2555w-ag on the 2nd floor. i am using 128bit wep shared mode.

all the computers that connect to the linksys are fine. most of the computers that connect to the smc are fine. but a few have some major issues. these are all fairly new computers, mostly less than 6 months old, bought brand new from compaq/hp.

when i turn on the laptop, it detects there are available networks.

the option to enter in a wep keyt is grayed out, the option for 802.1x is checked and grayed out so i cannot change it. this option is not checked on configs that work. (i dont think i use that)

so to put in the key, i have to go into advanced, then configuration. i select shared key WEP, and then enter the key. it doesnt even seem like there is enough room for 26 characters.

i press ok, still will not connect to the smc AP. it says it detects networks again, i go in, the wep option is grayed out again.

i go to manually enter it again, it switched wep to WPA. if i do the same thing, same thing happens- nothing. og back in, WEP changed to WPA again.

these computers that wont connect to smc network, will connect to linksys easily.

what kind of diagnostics and/or troubleshooting steps should i try to figure this problem out??

thanks a lot for your help
Kevin
