Wireless signal randomly drops on my laptop, not others!

May 20, 2012 at 06:59:23
Specs: Macintosh
Wireless signal provided by cable TV company with new wireless router box. My 5yo MacBook and 6yr old PC drop the signal intermittently; sometimes I can work for hours, sometimes it drops the signal, repeatedly, in seconds. Two laptops, both 1yr old, never drop the signal. It's very frustrating when we are all sitting on the couch and hubby and daughter have signal, but I have to keep reconnecting and reconnecting. Any idea what might be happening here? We didn't have this issue when the phone company was our wireless provider.

If the issue is isolated to one or two laptops/computers then the problem is likely to be the wireless interface on those devices.

You'll want to start by troubleshooting the wireless interface on them. I would suggest checking to ensure you have the most up-to-date drivers for the wireless interface.

With a Windows based PC, if the above doesn't fix the issue you can try removing the device from control panel and rebooting to let windows "find" the device. Ensure you're installing the most recent drivers when you do this.
