What model router? Is it a wireless model?
Does your laptop have an inbuilt wireless network card?

You connect from cable modem to router WAN port.

Connect from PC by wire to one of the router LAN ports so that you can access the router admin interface and set up your wireless.

Once your wireless has been enabled and security established, disconnect the PC from the wired connection and connect wirelessly using appropriate security login.
