Hi
I am about to order broadband from BT and have just noticed that the modem/router they supply has one ether net port and on USB port on it to connect other computers with. Due to the placement of the two machines, this type of connection is impossible to use. Does anyone know whether i can plug a wireless router into the modem and share the connection efficiently?
Thanks in advance, Matt

How far away are these two machines? Ethernet can stretch to 100 metres. Failing that connect one computer, the one nearest the DSL socket, to the USB and connect a Wireless Access Point in to the Ethernet port and use that. The BT supplied device is in effect a single port router with USB tagged on. Plugging in another router can be difficult to set up unless you know what you are doing.
Actually it may be cheaper to bin the BT supplied modem altogether and buy a Wireless modem/router. Stand alone Warless Access Points are becoming a rare breed and consequently the price isn't falling as fast as Wireless modem/routers are.
Or you could ask BT to upgrade to a Wireless router. They have enough to chose from. It may cost you but is likely to be cheaper than buying on the High Street.

The BT USB Modem has one RJ11 Connection and one USB Connection and they are crap bin it.
You need one of these:

Besides, you can usually only use the ethernet (RJ-45) OR the USB port, not both at same time.
You may not have time to search the Internet for your answer. Well, sorry, I may not either.

Most modems with both USB and Ethernet do allow both to be used at the same time. They are in effect single port routers with USB tagged on.
There are very few that do not. As stated by Matt, the one he is expecting does.

with any modem you either use one or the other. usb or ethernet. If you try to use both neither will work. They come with both because most use ethernet, but some computers do not have an ethernet card installed. So do not try to use both. You will get no where. However connecting using the ethernet is more secure . And yes you can plug a wireless into the modem and it should work just fine.
After hooking up the router, make sure you powercycle all. Unplug the modem and router. Make sure both computers are shut off. Plug in your modem and give the lights time to cycle up. Plug in your router and give it a few moments. Then start both your computers and they should be online. You will see that you have a 192. ip on both machines, that is the ip that is issued by your router.

USB and Ethernet do work together. Not on the same computer, but different computers.
I have set up three networks with three different USB/Ethernet devices and connect my laptop to all three on a regular basis via USB while the rest of the network is using Ethernet.

I've seen BT setups with a quite nice 4 port ethernet modem router which was supplied as standard - don't know if it's something to do with the package, but enquire if there's an option for this.
