My computer is connected to the internet (Broad band) via a modem. I have recently purchased a laptop with wireless LAN. I have just bought myself a wireless router. The cable which runs from the phone socket to the modem I have inserted into the WAN port of the wireless router. The cable which runs from the modem to the computer I have inserted into the LAN 1 port of the wireless router, so the modem is no longer in the equation. Wireless LAN works fine and I can browse the internet with my laptop no problem. The only thing is I have no internet connection with my desktop computer! Can anyone help? Thanks for any answers and help given!

Not too sure whether you got a wireless router or wireless router built-in modem support, here is the typical way to connect the wireless router with modem.

Ok, you've got things all messed up and I'm surprised anything works at all.

It should look like this:

DSL (phone line) >> modem >> wireless router

It has to be this way as the modem codes/decodes the signal and without it you get nothing.

It would help a lot to know what make/model of modem you have. Chances are it's a combo unit that is also a router. If that is the case, your setup should look as follows:

DSL >> modem/router >> wireless router

You will want to disable NAT and the firewall on the wireless router and setup DHCP on both routers as follows:

Combo Modem/Router:
DHCP Scope: 192.168.0.50 to 192.168.0.100
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: IP of Combo Modem/Router (LAN IP)

Wireless Router:
DHCP Scope: 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.0.150
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: IP of Combo Modem/Router (LAN IP)

This way any wired clients you plug in get a proper IP from the combo unit and any wireless clients brought in get a proper IP from the wireless router. Also, you won't end up with IP conflicts.

NOTE: You will want to enable WPA encryption on the wireless signal for your own protection.

Hi Guys. I connected everything up OK and comfigured the router and set up the encryption for WLAN no problem! I was surfing the net with my desktop PC (LAN cable from the router)and my laptop via wireless LAN. Great I thought until I switched off my desktop PC. No more internet wireless LAN and after restarting my desktop PC, no more internet connection. I imagine it is someting simple but it has me baffled! Could it be something to do with the modem itself not keeping a constant internet connection open! Any help is of course most appreciated! Thanks.
